Pearl: Classification Keshi (keishi) Sort of the tweak of nature, the appearance of this gems is unpredictable. Often, you can see rainbow-colored pearls, it is especially true for Tahitian keshi pearl. Regardless its beauty, keshi was cheap. However, modern technologies made it rare - farmers use X-rays to determine if the mussel have rejected the core. If it happens, the ouster is sent to "re-implantation" of the irritant. Maybe it will raise the price of keshi, as it is no longer produced at mass scale. Conch A saltwater not-quite-pearl, as it contains no mother of pearl. Its composition is closer to the kidney stones. It can be found in the body of a mussel, however of a different mussel, called Queen conch (Strombus gigas). We still do not know why and how this type of pearl is being formed. Queen conch is eatable, every year many tons of them are extracted, but only one of about ten thousand has the treasure inside. Accordingly, the price of conch is very high. Conch is usually small, 3-7 mm in size, oval in shape. The color differs, it can be pink, orange, red and so on. Additionally, conch has a beautifull pattern, it resembles the pattern on ancient Damassk weaponry. Our attempts to domesticate conch mussels are still unsuccessfull, so the only conch pearl we have is wild occuring one. Melo melo Same way as conch, this is not the "real" pearl, as it does not contain the mother of pearl. It is produced by a sea mussel called Melo Melo (melo amphora), that lives near the Bengal shoreline and in South China Sea. This pearl is very large and often spherical in shape. The largest known melo melo pearl was a size of a golf ball! The color of melo melo varies from dark brown to pink. Melo melo is very rare and very expensive, as the mussel cannot be cultivated. It was known in China for a long time, but only resently appeared on European market. Scallop This pearl, too, has no mother of pearl, instead, it is composed of calcareous concretions. It is produced by a scallop mussel, also known as Mano de Leon or The Pacific Lion's Paw. This mussel is common in Central and North America, especially near California. The name of the mussel was given due to the shape of its shell, reminding the footprint of a lion. Scallop is an eatable mussel, but the pearls are so rare, that the fisherman that have psent his entire live catching scallops may only find few pearls. The scallop pearls are usually symmetric: spherical, oval or drop-like shaped. The size varies from a small seed to as large as 40 carate. The color varies from white to dark purple, with orange, pink and plum tones. It has the pattern, but it is not like the conch pattern: it is so beautiful and unique that can compete with gemstones.
